SmokeCheck: the NSW Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Tobacco Prevention Project

The SmokeCheck Project sought to contribute to improve the health of Aboriginal people in New South Wales (NSW) and to eliminate or reduce their exposure to tobacco in all its forms. The SmokeCheck Project focused on capacity building initiatives to enable Aboriginal Health Workers and health services in NSW to encourage, assist and support Aboriginal clients to make quit smoking attempts.

SmokeCheck consisted of a one day training workshop for all health professionals working with Aboriginal clients, both in a mainstream or community controlled health setting. The workshop prepared participants to use smoking cessation brief interventions in their routine contacts with clients, and provided a set of culturally specific resources that have been developed to deliver the SmokeCheck brief intervention.

Topics covered in the training included:

The SmokeCheck Project also worked with local managers of health services and agencies to enable them to support their staff to routinely provide clients with brief smoking cessation interventions. The project supported past workshop participants through regular updates of new information and resources available through a website, newsletters and online module.

The NSW SmokeCheck Project was funded by the NSW Department of Health and the Cancer Institute NSW. The project was administered through the Sydney School of Public Health at the University of Sydney.
