Alert Program Study

The Alert Program Study aims to develop, implement and evaluate a curriculum version of the mainstream Alert Program, to be delivered by teachers and school staff to improve impairments in self regulation and executive functioning of primary school aged children in the Fitzroy Valley, Western Australia (WA), with and without Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD).

The Alert Program was originally developed in the United States (US) to assist children who may face challenges such as autism and ADHD to self-regulate (the ability to attain, change or maintain an appropriate level of alertness for a task or situation). The study will tailor the mainstream program to meet the needs of the children of the Fitzroy Valley, who have been disproportionately affected by FASD.

Outcomes from the study will include:

The pilot phase of the program is currently in progress at a remote community school. In 2016 and 2017, a further nine schools from the Fitzroy Valley region will be invited to take part in the full study phase of the project. Analysis of the findings in 2018 will contribute to the basis of recommendations and preparation of guidelines for the use of the Alert Program with children who have impairments in self-regulation and executive functioning in similar settings.

The program is being conducted by the Telethon Kids Institute, with funding from a National Health and Medical Research Council project grant.
