Providing the evidence base to reduce harmful AOD use in
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities
This was a collaborative research project between the Southern Aboriginal Corporation and National Drug Research Institute, which utilised a community consultation process to study the alcohol, tobacco and other drug use among Aboriginal adolescents in a town in south-west Western Australia.
This study identified risk and resilience factors and opportunities for intervention, and enabled an Aboriginal community controlled organisation to develop an evidence-based strategy to address the harmful effects of alcohol and other drug use at a local level.
The study also had broad policy and practical implications and offers a template for action more broadly to address what is a significant health problem for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia.
The study was funded by the Australian National Preventative Health Agency.
