Impacts of meth/amphetamine, other drugs and alcohol in rural and remote areas in northern and north-east Queensland: an environmental scan.

Cairns: James Cook University

This paper draws together current research relating to the impacts of meth/amphetamine, other drugs and alcohol use in rural and remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in northern and northeast Queensland. It aims to address the following questions:

  • What evidence is there that meth/amphetamine, in particular crystal meth/amphetamine ('ice'), is being used in these communities?
  • What are the behaviours, symptoms and signs of meth/amphetamine use that service providers observe in these regions?
  • If 'ice' is being used, who is using it and what are the impacts?

The paper also provides recommendations to the Queensland Government aimed at preventing any future increase in 'ice' usage in this region.

Sexual health and relationships in young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people: results of the first Australian study of knowledge, risk practices and health service access for sexually transmissible infections (STIs) and blood borne viruses (BBVs) among young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people: the Goanna Survey.

Alice Springs: Baker IDI Heart & Diabetes Institute

This survey is the first national survey of young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in relation to sexually transmissible infections (STIs) and blood borne viruses (BBVs) undertaken in Australia.

The survey involved collection of data comprising four areas:

  • demographics
  • knowledge of STIs and BBVs
  • risk behaviours, and
  • use of and access to health services.

Just under 3,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 16-29 were surveyed in every Australian jurisdiction. The project was initiated in 2010, and data collection occurred during 2011-2013.

The survey was funded by an Australian Research Council Linkage Grant with contributions from state and territory health departments, and was coordinated by peak Aboriginal health organisations in each jurisdiction.

2010 National Drug Strategy Household Survey report.

Canberra: Australian Institute of Health and Welfare

The 2010 National Drug Strategy Household Survey was conducted between late-April and early-September 2010. This was the 10th survey in a series which began in 1985, and was the fifth to be managed by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW). More than 26,000 people aged 12 years or older participated in the survey, in which they were asked about their knowledge of and attitudes towards drugs, their drug consumption histories, and related behaviours. Most of the analysis presented is of people aged 14 years or older, so that results can be compared with previous reports.
